Living Aligned: Values + Why They Matter

Do you feel confused with the direction of your life?

Or frustrated with how you spend your time, money, or resources?

Maybe you feel disconnected to your feelings or sense of self, numbed out, or even like you are sleep walking through life.

If you feel any of that, you are not alone! It is a universal experience to feel purposeless, but it often can be traced back to one simple question:

Am I living in alignment with my values?

It sounds like a nice concept, living out your values. But what does that mean, and how do you actually do it?

Living in alignment with your values isn't just a feel-good idea. It's a deeply grounding way to live. What you believe, and how it shows up in your day to day affects every area of your life. It affects your mental health, physical health, your sense of purpose, your relationships, your words, and even your thoughts! When you’re living in sync with what really matters to you, there is power and purpose in that.

Let’s unpack what that really looks like, and how you can tell if you’re currently doing that. Your day-to-day decisions, big and small, reflect what you believe is truly important. It means your outer life starts to mirror your inner compass.

  • If you value honesty, you're speaking up instead of shrinking back.

  • If you value family, you're showing up for them.

  • If you value creativity, you’re carving out time to make things, not just thinking about them.

The key is that you're not just talking about what matters to you- you’re embodying it. This comes with intention and commitment.

When you’re living in alignment, it might not always feel easy, but it feels right. There’s an internal calm, even when life is chaotic. You feel like you can look yourself in the eye. You’re less anxious, less reactive. Your choices feel meaningful, not just automatic. It's the process of feeling and living like yourself.

You're no longer splitting your energy between who you are and who you're pretending to be.

So… How does it feel to be OUT of alignment?

You might not even notice it at first. It creeps in as irritability, burnout, or a vague sense of disconnection. You might feel like you’re going through the motions, or like you don't connect with what you are doing. Sometimes it shows up as overcommitting, people-pleasing, or numbing out with distractions. You feel busy but unfulfilled. Successful on paper but uninspired inside.

Here are a few simple questions to check in with yourself:

  • Do my actions reflect what I say matters to me?
If you say health is a priority, are you actually making time for rest, movement, or nourishment? If connection is key, are you cultivating it.

  • Am I proud of how I show up, even when no one’s watching?
Living your values isn't about perfection. It’s about integrity, doing the thing that feels right even when it’s uncomfortable, inconvenient, or quiet.

  • When I say yes to something, am I saying no to something that matters more?
Misalignment often comes from good intentions... But too many “yeses” can crowd out your real priorities.

  • Am I energized or depleted by the life I’m creating?
Alignment brings energy. Even hard work feels fulfilling when it’s aligned with your values. If everything feels like a drain, something might be off.

  • Do I feel at peace with my choices- even when others don’t understand them?
Living your values might not always win applause. But deep down, you’ll know when a choice is right for you.

If you read all this and thought, “Yikes, I might be off-track,”, you’re not alone. Alignment isn’t a destination. It’s a practice. And like any good practice, it starts with awareness and small, consistent shifts.

Take a piece of paper and a pen, put away your phone, and try out this exercise.

  • Write out 5 values for this season of life.

  • Ask yourself what you are currently doing that align with these values.

  • Ask yourself what you are currently doing that does NOT align with these values.

  • Ask yourself what needs to change to live these out? Under each value, write PRACTICAL STEPS.

Maybe that means adding things to your calendar, or taking something away. Maybe that means reaching out to a close friend or family member for accountability in your new goals. Maybe it means changing up your routine to make space for something new.

You don’t have to burn everything down to start living within your values.

You just have to be willing to pause, realign, and move forward with more intention.

When your choices reflect your core, you feel more like you.
